Rockaway sure does!
With so many places that focus on chicken sandwiches in town, we visited four to see how they stacked up.
1. Papa Al’s
Formerly known as Cheeks, it has a new name AND a new location. If “bigger is better,” Papa Al’s takes the gold. Their fried chicken piece was the largest by far and had cheese stuffed in the middle, which was a happy surprise. Loved their bun and their signature sauce.
2. Pop’s Place
A newcomer to the area, the sandwich from Pop’s Place hands down had the most beautiful bun. Very fast and friendly service. Add bacon, lettuce and tomato to really up the ante.
There’s a good reason the late chef Anthony Bourdain hailed this as his favorite chicken sandwich! Crunchy fried chicken coating, and super moist. Yeah, we said it, moist.
The oldest and perhaps the pioneer of the fried chicken sandwich, it’s a standard you can count on. A thick chicken filet served on a squishy bun with pickles, the coating has a bit of a kick to it. Add a little of their KFC sauce and it’s still finger lickin’ good.
